I bought in a garden centre sale here in Inverness a couple of months ago this plant for a few pounds and thought nothing ventured nothing gained. The trick would be to get it through the winter in one piece and see if it would put on fresh growth in the spring.
When I bought it all the current seasons growth had been cut down to about 150cm above ground level, I potted it up into a slightly larger pot to try and help insulate the roots a little bit from frost and kept it just moist and close to the house to lessen it getting waterlogged.
The recent cold snap has caused some of the old stems to start to turn somewhat mushy and I fear that it might just rot away given continued cold weather conditions. I've resorted to covering it with an old towel to try and insulate it somewhat and have placed it beneath some staging to keep it totally dry, it will however still be exposed to cold conditions with the chance of the soil in the pot freezing solid.
Any thoughts on it's long term chances of getting through this winter?
